Protecting Yourself From Mosquito Bites

Protecting Yourself From Mosquito Bites

Spring means beautiful weather, camping and spending time with friends. Unfortunately, it also brings the mosquitoes. Over the last few years, these pests have brought a variety of problems, including the West Nile and Zika VIrus – mosquito borne diseases. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about catching one of those particular mosquitoes. But, you do have to worry about a typical bite! They come in swarms as the weather warms and it’s hard to catch them all. If you’ve been bitten by a mosquito, you know that the bites are itchy and swell. You likely want to avoid them altogether, like the rest of us. To avoid these unwanted pests, here are some tips:

Mosquito repellant lanterns and coils

Whether you’re at the camp (how to bug proof your camp) or in your own back yard, these lanterns can drastically reduce the mosquitoes. They emit a scent that mosquitoes can’t stand, which saves you the hassle of trying to swat them away. These lanterns can come in different forms, as well. From Tiki lamps that sit in the ground, to hanging lanterns around the porch. If you don’t want a lantern, you can also opt for the coils. These coils are started with a lighter, similar to incense. As they burn, the same scent is emitted, discouraging these unwanted pests from visiting.

Screened-In Porches

A screened-in porch is a must-have if you have a porch. This means you can enjoy the nice fresh air without worrying about mosquitos and unwanted pests. You can also avoid having to light the lanterns, if you’re not a fan of the smell. There are also mosquito-net outfits, in case you’re heading camping. Of course, before heading to the camp, make sure to check your tent for any tears! A hole in the tent would be the perfect chance for one of these unwanted pests to sneak in.

Cover Your Skin and Wear Skin-Based Repellent

One of the best ways to avoid mosquito bites is by wearing layers. Of course, not all of us want to be bundled up. For those who aren’t looking forward to the layers, you should consider spray-on bug repellent. You won’t smell great, but that’s a good thing. It means those unwanted pests flying around will leave you alone. Should you get a bite: Immediately wash it out with salt or lemon juice. This will prevent some of the itching, as well as neutralize any possible infection.

The Smell in the Air

One scent that mosquitoes absolutely despise is Apple Cider Vinegar. You can get candles with this scent, too. Or you can rub the oil on your skin. Tangy things, like lemon and orange peels tend to discourage mosquitoes as well. You can scatter these around the yard or campsite to prevent mosquitoes from taking over. Garlic and onions are among the scents, but you’re unlikely to want everything to smell like that. Believe it or not, vanilla is actually a scent that can repeal mosquitoes as well!

Remember: Preventative measures are the most reliable form of pest control. You should be able to enjoy a safe and mosquito-less summer.
